Dough Bowl

The Catch

In the late 19th and early 20th century, hand carved, wooden trencher bowls were a staple for every kitchen and the tool for making the perfect loaf of bread. Depending on the length of the bowl, up to three bakers would be able to use the bowl at one time; two women on one side working the ends of the dough and the third opposite towards the middle, rocking the bowl back and forth.

Primitive in nature, these bowls are now more commonly used as fruit bowls, flower trenchers, magazine holders or bath racks.

As with most antique items, their markings can often be their selling point - the display of marks from many decades of cutting, chopping and kneading the dough give it all the character and appeal of a primitive household bowl.
